  • Dexter - a quick rant

I’ve been making my way through Dexter on DVD.  It’s pretty good, suspenseful, entertaining, and all that.  I’m up to the fifth episode of season 4.

Michael C. Hall plays a forensic blood spatter expert in Miami with a secret serial vigilante hobby on the side.  His character is supposed to be pretending to have a soul that he doesn’t really have.  He plays this character with the same upper-class mode of speech that plagues all of his other roles.  It doesn’t work for me.  His performance, in my expert opinion, is average at best.  But every year he gets nominated for all the top television acting awards, like they’re all bought and paid for.

Meanwhile his co-star Jennifer Carpenter plays his sister with an amount of depth, charm, believability, and watchability that Michael C. Hall is wholly incapable of.  I feel like almost any working actor could turn in a performance equal to Michael C. Hall’s, and would probably do it without sounding like a prep school snob.  But Jennifer Carpenter’s performance bursts with life and beauty.  And all she ever gets are Saturn award nominations.
