In 1998 I was a young movie theater manager getting used to running a projection booth. One day I was in the booth and some kind of urgent problem happened with one of the projectors. I ran to deal with it, and while doing so I ran past a film splicing table with a spindle sticking out of it horizontally. The spindle carved this four-inch gash into my pale, boyish flesh.
I was by myself except for some part-time staff, so I just had to slap some gauze on it and go about the rest of my day. It was ten hours later before I could deal with it, and decided then to go to the ER. I might not have the scar if I’d gone there right away, but as it was it was too late for stitches.
People sometimes ask me what the worst part of that experience was, and I always say the same thing: “It just really hurt when that thing gashed my arm like that.”
